Work (Non-EDU)

IDSeq Pre-Seed Startup

Lead Software Engineer & Research Scientist Feb 2023 - Apr 2024

Helped develop computational theory IP by translating in-house information-theoretic algorithms to high-performance scalable research tools that would become the backend of our primary product. Directed the rapid creation of on-prem HPC and automation workflows to meet our time-critical team needs. Applied our research tools toward antibiotic drug discovery and several other domains, helping to quickly isolate the real-world strengths of our tools.

Conducto

Python Generalist & Data Science Product Owner Oct 2020 - Apr 2021

As a core developer for the 10-person data science startup Conducto, Jory brought a "can-do" attitude to a variety of feature requests and brainstorming sessions for their data science and live debug pipeline service. This included learning and interacting with a variety of technologies to solve problems from backend to frontend, but focused on backend, building service APIs, and integrating others like Github.

  • Feature-owner and developer for Jupyter Notebook nodes: automation testing, performance scaling, live rendering, and live debugging in Conducto. See the portfolio capture.
  • Performed complex database migrations.
  • Tech: SOA Microservices, Python, Rust, Javascript, Docker, AWS, SQL, SQLite, MongoDB.

Aeshen LLC

Web SWE, Desktop SWE, Microsoft Blend Instructor, Instructional Designer, Animator, Automation Engineer Mar 2008 - Jul 2009

Jory joined a small 3-person team at the startup company Aeshen where he personally focused on software development of technical, challenging, or flashy portions of software that other companies were not equipped to handle (C♯,Python,AHK,PHP,SQL,Flash). The other major activity involved teaching cutting-edge software (Silverlight) in week-long bootcamps across the country, or through self-developed and directed screencasts, as a part of a fast and dynamic team where Jory was co-responsible for QA and client relations with companies such as Nike, Intel, Microsoft, Porter&Bogusky. Jory was being encouraged into higher-stakes financial responsibilities when he instead resigned, leaving his Aeshen friends and colleagues so that he could pursue a time-sensitive opportunity to begin graduate school.

  • Created the Flash API, PHP API, DB, and final code for an Intel sweepstakes questionnaire/entry, focusing on security since their previous consultant created a hackable site that was hacked. The client liked the clean and commented code, giving them confidence.
  • Created programmable dynamic frameworks that could be easily adjusted due to shifting client demands, allowing Aeshen to maximize profits for tasks that are typically expensive.
  • Made custom software to automate a repeated complex content conversion process that reduced person-hours for the team by nearly a factor of 10x.
  • Created a custom arbitrary Flash animation video player from scratch to client specification, complete with caption support for popular formats, volume, fullscreen, and chapter navigation, for a large Intel kiosk and sales project.

Education

Michigan State University

Dual-Focus Ph.D. toward Artificial Cognition May 2017
— Computer Science & Engineering
— Ecology, Evolutionary Biology, & Behavior

During my tenure there, MSU was the National Science Foundation center for the Study of Evolution in Action. It was a great place to study with people from vastly different fields of study toward the understanding of cognition and intelligent behavior, and the evolutionary pressures that resulted in cognitive traits.

Keck Graduate Institute

M.S. Computational Biology May 2011

Here I started my Ph.D. journey, following my awesome advisor — Chris Adami — to Michigan State University.

Linfield University

B.S. Computational Science May 2007

Originally a music major — 2 classes short for a composition degree — I switched to computer science. This was the result of needing to decide how to best spend my limited money, and critically assessing happiness and longevity in each field.
